SBIR/STTR Phase 2 Recipient?

Active NSF SBIR/STTR Phase 2 recipients can join the S2ERC for two years at the reduced rate of $5k per year due to a NSF Supplemental Grant and receive the same benefits as a full member. A recent report published on September 30, 2014 titled, “NSF’s Supplemental Opportunity for SBIR/STTR members in I/UCRC’s: An Assessment of its impact on I/UCRC’s and SBIR/STTR’s” by Drs. Denis O. Gray, Drew Rivers, and Lindsey McGowen and Lena Leonchuk and Tim Michaelis (North Carolina State University) surveyed 72 SBIR/STTR firms who were I/UCRC members between 2008-2013 and identified the following major benefits:
  • Networking/human capital
  • R&D
  • Commercialization
Additionally, the report identified several other member benefits including:
  • Augmented R&D capabilities
  • Enhanced market intelligence
  • Development of new research directions
  • Insight into new applications
On enhanced market intelligence, to borrow a quote from the report, “Typical descriptions of this benefit include: “got information about the market potential of our technology”; “helped reposition to new markets”; “business contacts helped us identify new markets.” In at least one instance, the firm reported the market insight resulted in a change of research (“better understanding of the market which led to new spheres of research”).” If you are a SBIR/STTR Phase 2 Recipient, please contact the S2ERC’s Director, Wayne Zage, for more information about joining.
