Ontario Systems
|
| A
mini-SERC Showcase tailored to specific needs
of Ontario Systems was held on February 17,
2006 in Muncie, IN.The Showcase included talks by Paul Gestwicki, Vinayak
Tanksale, John Dailey, Ugo Buy (virtually),
Kirsten Smith, Paul Buis and Dolores Zage.Overall, six prospective SERC projects were proposed
for Ontario consideration.
So far, Ontario has agreed to fund

SERC
Showcase Guest Speaker
Our guest speaker at the banquet this year
is Dr. Ken Zdunek, Vice President of Networks Research
at Motorola. Ken directs the research labs where
he and his team work on improving software engineering
productivity and quality, improving the cost and flexibility
of wireless network infrastructures, and developing new
end-to-end network-level security approaches to meet the
new demands placed on security created by interconnecting
networks. He is the holder of 16 patents and is an active
leader on many boards in the Chicago area. We look
forward to his presentation.

ARL is the
Newest SERC Affiliate
We
are very happy to announce that the Army Research Laboratory (ARL) in Adelphi, Maryland
is joining SERC.Glenn Racine, who
attended the last SERC Showcase at Ball State
in November, 2005 will serve as the SERC Industrial Advisory Board member
representing ARL.This in fact is
Glenn’s second tour of duty with the SERC, since he attended a number
of SERC Showcases when he worked in Army research at AIRMICS, the Army
Institute for Research in Management Information, Communications, and
Computer Sciences in Atlanta,
Georgia.Welcome aboard, ARL!

SERC Students
attend 11th Annual Student Symposium
SERC
research assistants, Tao Lu and Fabien Poulard, presented their research
work at Ball State University’s
Eleventh Annual Student Symposium on Tuesday, March 21, 2006. The research
topic they presented is “Test management and collaboration support
for globally distributed testing teams”. The Ball State Student
Symposium is to recognize and promote student accomplishments in the areas
of research, creative endeavors and other scholarly works.

Raytheon and Motorola
Practitioners Participate in
Design Walkthroughs at Ball State
Wayne
Zage is teaching a graduate level software engineering course this semester
at Ball State. In this course, the students experience
the software development life cycle up to product release as they work in
teams to deliver a working system to a customer. One of the course activities is to have
the students conduct a design walkthrough of their design materials.During the spring 2006 term, Wayne Zage
invited software practitioners from SERC affiliates to provide the students
with additional feedback and insight as the students presented their design
artifacts.Jeff Stineburg from
Raytheon and Zhihui Yang from Motorola each led a team of reviewers as
students presented their materials. The students appreciated the professional critique of their
materials from Jeff and Zhihui, as well as their comments about how such
reviews are conducted in industry. This is another example of benefits of industrial affiliate
relationships with researchers and their students that goes beyond the
“normal” SERC research projects.
